Dec. 27th, 2009 09:56 pmThe day after Christmas, Trowa checks all his usual sites, and a few extras. (There are always a few extras.) There's still nothing to worry about -- the standard rumblings of discontent here and there, not ominous quiet, but nothing organized or effective or serious enough for immediate concern. Preventers bulletins are quiet; L3's police forces aren't dealing with anything out of the ordinary; atmo traffic alerts are as usual.
The day after that, he does the same thing. Most of the same places, a few different ones.
What he sees, two minutes into scanning Preventers memos, stops him dead.
CAPTAIN DUO MAXWELL AWOL AS OF DEC. 25 201, 2100 HOURS L2 LOCAL TIME. ALL AGENTS REPORT INFORMATION ON CAPTAIN MAXWELL'S WHEREABOUTS IMMEDIATELY UPON ACQUISITION.
AWOL -- is not worst-case, but it's pretty damn bad. For a Gundam pilot, on Christmas, two days ago--
Well. It's bad.
(This is standard procedure for an agent gone AWOL off-duty and with no evidence of foul play. Day one, the commanding officer is notified and a localized APB put out if the agent can't be contacted; on the second day, headquarters and the generalized APB. Trowa knows this. But -- standard procedure works best under standard circumstances.)
Trowa breathes out, closes some windows, and opens some others.
The time that's wasted is already gone. Dwelling on it now would be wasting more. Trowa has work to do instead.
In about two hours, Cathy will be disappointed, and secretly worried, to learn that today Trowa's going to eat breakfast in front of his computer instead of with her. (And without looking away from the screen, or stopping his rapid typing and scrolling.) And, in about two hours, Trowa will have found rather less information than he'd hoped.
